Cycling itself has become popular worldwide and is used as a means of transport, a form of recreation and as a sport. Cycling has become popular in many cities as an easy, convenient and cheap method of transport with many cities creating cycle lanes to allow riders more safety on the roads. Commercial cycling has been around for a long time and has been used by the British Postal service and the police force historically. Today many delivery companies utilise bicycles to allow fast manoeuvring in city streets and quick delivery.
The recreational use of bicycles is seen for all ages and is a healthy sport. Many people use cycling as a means of sightseeing and clubs have appeared which hold organised rides. These rides organised cycling rides can consist of both professional riders and others who just join in for the fun of it! One famous example of these is the London to Brighton bike ride held to raise money for charity. It is approximately 50 miles in length and usually has 30,000 riders taking part.
Mountain biking is the off-road sport of cycling through difficult terrain and has become very popular in the 20th century. It can be broken down into cross country, downhill, freeride and trials/street riding each also requiring different level of skill, safety and type of bicycle. It is a tough sport and requires good physical fitness, endurance and skill. Due to the challenge mountain biking offers has encouraged its growth as a sport with many clubs around the UK organizing rides and treks.
